Shortly before the start of the school year, a family moved into one of Moscow's new buildings: a nine-year student Yulka with her mother Lyudmila Sergeyevna, a spectacular forty-year-old woman, and a stepfather, who was much younger than his wife.

At school, Lyudmila Sergeyevna had an affair with Kostya Lavochkin, whom she abandoned for the sake of the pilot, her future husband, Julia's father.

Kostya could not reconcile for a long time. Despite the fact that he himself had a family, and Lyudmila Sergeyevna had a daughter, he came to his beloved.

Upon learning of her husband’s many novels, Lyudmila Sergeevna drove him away. Kostya had hope, but she rejected him. Soon they parted from Moscow in different directions, but now Kostya unexpectedly met Lyudmila Sergeyevna on the street and rushed to her, although his wife and son were next to him. Kostya’s wife, Vera, an unattractive, overweight woman who constantly nurses her sick husband, was horrified by what she saw.

On the first of September, Yulka came to a new class, where Kostya's son, Roman, was studying.

There was a romantic relationship between the children. Vera looked after the sick Kostya, Lyudmila Sergeyevna was expecting a baby, and the children were left unattended for a while.

They made appointments in the children's department of the supermarket, by the pool ... ‹...› People became nature, and their human quantity did not matter at all.

Having given birth to a son, Lyudmila Sergeyevna came to the parent's meeting and was surprised to learn that Kostya’s son was studying with her daughter in the same class, and Julia was friends with him. Having learned from her son that Julia now has a brother, Vera was glad that her husband was not interested in Lyudmila Sergeevna, but was horrified that her son was friends with Julia.

After graduating from the ninth grade, the boys left for practice, and the girls remained in the city. Vera came to visit her son, and although classmates and class teacher Tatyana Nikolaevna tried to distract her, she saw him next to Yulka.

She decided, without asking her son, to transfer him to another school. Lyudmila Sergeyevna was also unhappy with the friendship of her daughter with the son of her former admirer, but she tried to take it calmly.

Yulka and Roman spent the summer yearning for each other in different cities. When he returned, Roman found out that he would study at another school.Vera insisted that the new school has a very strong physical and mathematical bias, and this is useful to her son who wants to go to a technical university. Roman lost to his mother.

Julia found out about Roman’s translation and realized that they want to separate them. Roman reassured her: they cannot be separated. Having learned about Roman’s transfer, Tatyana Nikolaevna told the school principal that these children should not be separated, but the principal took the side of Vera.

Preparing the most difficult trials, life can pre-paralyze the will of those who could prevent something.

Tatyana Nikolaevna did not have a relationship with her admirer who, out of desperation, married another woman, but continued to call her ex-lover. The teacher saw that Julia is suffering, studying badly. She remembered her own school love, which her parents had destroyed.

Julia and Roman continued to meet. Upon learning about this, Vera decided to send her son to Leningrad, where her mother and sister lived. She told Roman that her grandmother had a pre-stroke condition, her aunt was working, and she herself could not leave her sick husband.

Upon learning that Vera’s mother was seriously ill, Tatyana Nikolaevna decided to inquire about her health, as she was familiar with Vera’s relatives. Vera admitted that she had deceived her son to save him from the daughter of an unworthy woman.

Seeing the suffering of her daughter, Lyudmila Sergeyevna forgot about herself and decided to help her. Julia did not understand why she wrote to Roman all the time, and he replied that he had not received her letters.

Tatyana Nikolaevna tried to convince Yulka that, despite separation from Roman, it was necessary to study.She explained that Roman was doing her duty, but the girl believed that the main thing in life was love.

I did not want to talk, think, remember, react. The world from color became black and white, from polyphonic - monotonous, from volume - flat.

Roman was worried that he did not receive letters from Yulka. He did not realize that at the grandmother's request for a letter, the postman was hiding from him.

Finally, Julia decided to fly to Leningrad. On that day, Roman unexpectedly came home from school early and saw his grandmother talking on the phone with a glass of beer and a cigarette in her hands.

Realizing that he had been deceived, Roman locked himself in the room and decided to shoot himself from an ancient pistol. In the desk drawer he found letters hidden by Yulkina.

To escape to Moscow, Roman jumped out the window and hit his chest on a drainpipe. He saw Julia entering the courtyard, tried to stand on his feet and covered his bloodied mouth so as not to frighten her. Julia ran up, Roman fell into her arms, and from all sides people ran to them - “how close they turned out to be” ...
