Once a pike admired the hero's lifestyle. In her opinion, if everyone lived like him, then there would be expanse in the river. Of course, she said this for a reason. She wanted the flattered clerk to appear from the hole, then she would grab him. In old age, he remembered the words of the pike and received his sight. He realized that if everyone led the same hermit lifestyle, then the sight of the clerks would have died out long ago. He wanted to get out of the hole, show himself to the world and prove that he was not afraid of anyone, but could not. Just thinking about it made him tremble.
It's time for the old clerk to die. He decided to remember his life and realized that he had no joyful moments at all. "He lived and trembled - that's all." And now even no one comes to him. No one wants to know how he, the wise clerk, lived to be a hundred years old and was not eaten by fish. But no one calls him even wise. Everyone considers him a fool who is afraid of everything.
His hole was so small that he accidentally stuck his head out while sleeping. And suddenly disappeared. There is no doubt that he died his death, because no fish will eat such an old, sick and even wise clerk.
