(253 words) The word “hero” in Lermontov’s novel should not be understood in its original meaning. This work is not about a man worthy of fame and honor for his exploits. Pechorin is a character typical of the era of the author. At first glance, the protagonist may seem negative, negative, but at the same time, this image cannot but cause sympathy among the reader. And he is especially liked by women, whom the author describes.
What attracts Pechorin? After all, he seems cruel, arrogant, cynical. Throughout the novel, there are three love lines associated with the main character. It would seem that romantic relationships have the ability to soften the heart, open the soul to good, but this does not happen in the case of the character of Lermontov. He involuntarily destroys the lives and fates of loved ones, from which, sometimes, he himself suffers. This is not to say that all the evil committed by him was intentional, no. In his diary, the young man admits that he strove for bright feelings, for warmth and sincerity, but the environment forced him to become stony and cruel. The hero finds no use for himself, and boredom becomes the main problem. He goes to war, but even there he finds no satisfaction. And love affairs become nothing more than entertainment in the life of the protagonist: Mary is just a game, Bela is quickly bored.
However, looking at the relationship with Vera, you can see that all the coldness and pomp of Gregory is only a mask. Pechorin is a passionate, capable of love impulses person. This clearly illustrates a desperate act - an attempt to catch up with Vera. The only woman able to understand him, to give that warmth of the soul, which he was deprived of. And the hero, sensing this light necessary for him, reached out to him. But Pechorin is not able to change his fate.
